A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is an intensive form of day treatment that gives you many of the benefits of inpatient care while still allowing you to sleep at home.
In PHP, you attend treatment for several hours a day, most days of the week. You participate in therapy, skill-building groups, and psychiatric care in a structured setting, then return home each evening. It’s often used as:
A step-down from residential treatment or inpatient care, or
A step-up from traditional outpatient therapy when once-a-week sessions aren’t enough.
At Garden State Counseling Center in Paramus, our Partial Hospitalization Program is designed for adults who need more support than regular outpatient therapy, but don’t require 24/7 hospitalization. It’s a bridge between crisis and everyday life, giving you safety, structure, and consistent support as you heal.
At Garden State Counseling Center, our PHP in New Jersey provides intensive daytime treatment so you can return home each evening — balancing safety, structure, and independence.
Whether you’re in Jersey City, Trenton, or right here along the Shore, help is ready today.
PHP may be the right fit if you:
Need more support than weekly outpatient sessions can provide
Want full-day treatment while still being able to live at home
Are looking for structure, community, and expert guidance to stabilize recovery
Are managing both addiction and mental health symptoms and need coordinated care
If this sounds familiar, a Partial Hospitalization Program can give you the intensive help you need — without completely stepping away from your life, family, or responsibilities
If this sounds familiar, PHP can give you the guidance and tools you need to move forward — without losing connection to your daily life.
Our PHP combines medical support, therapy, and skill-building to help you find stability and confidence in recovery. A typical day in our program includes:
While every person’s schedule looks a little different, a typical day in our PHP may include:
Morning check-in & goal setting
Review how you’re feeling, set intentions for the day, and share any concerns with your treatment team.
Group therapy & psychoeducation
Learn about addiction, mental health, triggers, and relapse prevention in a supportive group setting.
Skills groups (CBT, DBT, and coping tools)
Practice strategies to manage cravings, anxiety, depression, and difficult emotions using evidence-based approaches.
Individual therapy sessions
Meet one-on-one with your therapist to work through deeper patterns, trauma, and personal goals.
Medication management & psychiatric support (when needed)
Meet with a psychiatric provider to review medications, monitor symptoms, and adjust your treatment plan as needed.
Life skills & wellness activities
Build routines around sleep, nutrition, self-care, and healthy communication.
Most clients attend PHP five days a week for several hours each day. The length of the program depends on your needs and progress, but many people stay for several weeks before stepping down to an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or standard outpatient care.
Every element of PHP is designed to help you build a foundation for long-term recovery while preparing for greater independence.
In our Partial Hospitalization Program, you don’t get a one-size-fits-all plan. Your care team uses a mix of therapies and supports to treat the whole person — mind, body, and relationships.
One-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist help you explore your story, uncover patterns, and set realistic goals that move you forward.
Therapist-led groups offer connection, shared learning, and a safe space to practice new skills so you feel less alone in your recovery.
CBT helps you notice and shift unhelpful thoughts and behaviors that keep you stuck in addiction, anxiety, or depression.
DBT teaches tools for managing intense emotions, reducing impulsive behaviors, and improving communication and relationships.
These approaches support healing from past trauma at a steady, safe pace — helping you stop reliving the past and reclaim confidence in the present.
If medication is part of your treatment, our psychiatric providers monitor your progress, adjust medications when needed, and support your overall stability.
When appropriate, we involve loved ones to help them understand what you’re facing and teach them how to support your recovery in healthy, sustainable ways.
Grounding exercises, mindfulness practices, and stress-reduction activities help regulate your nervous system and strengthen emotional resilience.
This blend of therapies is designed to help you stabilize in the short term and build lasting tools you can rely on long after PHP ends.
